POLICY FOR USE OF NEW KING JAMES VERSION

I.                GENERAL STATEMENT

                A.                Uses not requiring written permission.

 

                                Printed, Visual and Electronic Uses:

Up to 1,000 verses (inclusive) from assorted books of the New King James Version (NKJV) may be quoted in printed (e.g., book, brochure, magazine, newsletter, lesson outline), visual (e.g., film, video tape),  and electronic forms (e.g., computer diskette, CD-ROM, on-line) without written permission, as long as the verses quoted do not amount to 50% of a complete book of the Bible and do not make up 50% or more of the total text of the work in which they are quoted.

These uses of the NKJV must be acknowledged by an appropriate copyright notice as listed in Section II of this policy statement.  Permission is contingent upon an appropriate copyright acknowledgment.

 

Audible Uses:

Up to 250 verses (inclusive) from assorted books of the NKJV may be quoted in audible (e.g., audio recording, sermons, radio and TV broadcasts) form without written permission as long as the verses quoted do not amount to 50% of a complete book of the Bible and do not make up 50% or more of the total text of the work in which they are quoted. 

Use of the NKJV on audio recordings (e.g., audio cassettes, CDs) must be acknowledged by an appropriate copyright notice, as listed in Section II of this policy statement, on the label of each copy of the audio recording.  Permission is contingent upon an appropriate copyright acknowledgment.

 

Musical Uses:

The NKJV may be quoted in print or recorded music without written permission as long as the NKJV text portion does not make up 50% or more of the total lyrics of the song.

Use of the NKJV in print or recorded music must be acknowledged by an appropriate copyright notice, as listed in Section II of this policy statement.  Permission is contingent upon an appropriate copyright acknowledgment.

                Quotations must conform accurately to the NKJV text, including appropriate spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and special text formats.

                Within 30 days following the printed, visual, electronic, audible, or musical use of the NKJV, two complete copies of a work using quotations from the NKJV  (except for sermons, church bulletins, orders of service, Sunday School lessons, church newsletters, and similar works) must be sent to the following address:  Thomas Nelson Publishers, Attn:  Bible Rights and Permissions, 501 Nelson Place, Nashville, Tennessee 37214-1000. When cases where NKJV is used online, written notice of the web page address is required.

B.            Uses requiring written permission.

 

                                Printed, Visual,  Electronic, Audible and Musical  Uses:

Use of the NKJV text beyond the limitations of Section A above requires written permission.  Requests for rights or permission should be made in writing (no e-mail) to Thomas Nelson Publishers, Attn: Bible Rights and Permissions,  P.O. Box 141000, Nashville, TN 37214-1000.

Requests  should state (1) the exact portions to be quoted; (2) the estimated percentage of the total text of the work made up of the NKJV text; (3) the use in which the NKJV will be quoted (e.g. book, computer product, audio cassette, musical composition); (4) any material to be included in the work, such as additional text, illustrations, photos, etc.; (5) the purpose, number of copies or reproductions, and distribution of the use in which the NKJV is quoted; and (6) the sale or lease price of the work, or other income to be received. 

 

II.                ACKNOWLEDGMENT AND COPYRIGHT NOTICE

 

Any use of the NKJV text must include a proper copyright notice or acknowledgment.

 

A.                Printed, visual ,  and audible uses:

Works using NKJV quotations must include one of the following copyright notices (whichever one is most appropriate) placed on the title or copyright page of a printed work, the credits of a visual work, or on the label of an audible work or accompanying a musical composition:

B.                musical uses:

 

                Each printed copy of the song and each phonorecord of the song must display the acknowledgment:

C.                Electronic use:

In electronic media the Nelson copyright notice, “New King James Version, Copyright © 1982, Thomas Nelson, Inc. All rights reserved.”, must be displayed when the program or on-line address is initialized, along with the following notice:

 

“Bible text from the New King James Version is not to be reproduced in copies or otherwise by any means except as permitted in writing by Thomas Nelson, Inc., Attn:  Bible Rights and Permissions, P.O. Box 141000, Nashville, TN 37214-1000.”

                In addition, “NKJV” must appear on any print-out of verses.

D.                Church use:

When quotations from the NKJV text are used in church bulletins, orders of service, Sunday School lessons, church newsletters and similar works in the course of religious instruction or services at a place of worship or other religious assembly, the following notice is to be used at the end of each quotation: “NKJV”.

 

III.           SPECIAL APPROVALS FOR DISPLAY OF NEW KING JAMES VERSION

If the words “New King James Version” or “NKJV” are displayed or featured prominently with a work, such as on a book cover, advertising of a product, or on the title page of any product in which the NKJV has been used, approval from Thomas Nelson Publishers for such display is required prior to release of the product.  A prototype of the book cover, advertising material, or title page is to be mailed or faxed to Thomas Nelson Publishers for review.

 

IV.                TRANSLATION RIGHTS

 

                The translation of any portion of the NKJV into another language without the express written consent of Thomas Nelson Publishers is prohibited.
