| ...Southern Baptists in Tennessee are trying to keep that state free from legalized gambling as voters there head to the polls on November 5 to decide the fate of a state-run lottery. Tennessee Baptist Convention Executive Director Dr. James Porch says between now and November, Baptists will mount an all-out offensive against the proposed lottery. Porch says the primary emphasis Baptists are putting out to the public is what they feel the lottery can do to children. In addition, Porch does not think that it is going to be -- in any way -- good for the economy of the state. The targets of a lottery, he says, are many times "the poor and disadvantaged people." Current polls show 58% of Tennesseans support a state lottery, but Porch believes the lottery can be defeated -- if Christians show up on election day. |
