...The rift in the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod over a New York pastor's participation in an interfaith service has deepened. The Synod's vice president, the Reverend Wallace Schulz, suspended the Reverend David Benke for praying with non-Christians, including Muslims and Buddhists, at Yankee Stadium after the September 11 terrorist attack. Now, Schulz has been removed as host of The Lutheran Hour -- a program carried by more than 1,000 radio stations -- amid angry calls protesting his decision. The denomination's president -- who had given Benke permission to take part in the service -- let Schulz decide the case, but now wants him to reconsider Benke's suspension.
