Never Mind What It Says in 2 Corinthians -- Jesus Was a Sinner, Bishop Says

(AgapePress) - An Episcopal bishop in Pennsylvania claims Jesus Christ was a sinner.

In a recent column titled "The Challenge of Easter," Bishop Charles Bennison said, while Jesus forgives sins, he "acknowledged his own sin [and] knows himself to be forgiven."

Such statements are routine for Bennison, who is notorious for his disregard of biblical authority. He has openly denied that salvation is found in Christ alone. He is also on record as saying the Church wrote the Bible and thus can rewrite it -- and in an interview with National Public Radio stated: "just because there are millions of conservative Christians who rally around issues like homosexuality, that doesn't mean they're right."

David Moyer, rector of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Rosemont, says unfortunately, in the Episcopal church, it is very difficult to hold a Bishop accountable for false teaching. "The mechanism is not there to do it," Moyer says. "It's very hard to enforce."

Moyer is urging Episcopalians to express their opposition to Bennison's comments by contacting the bishop directly, and speaking the truth in love as Paul charged the Ephesians.

He hopes Christians will "rally around clergy and congregations that are taking the position of holding high the banner of biblical truth, and ... hold up the arms of [those pastors] as the arms of Moses were held up in days of old."

With the support of his parish and other Episcopalians, Moyer has "declared Charles Bennison a false teacher -- and told him that he's not welcome to come here and ... function in the capacity of a bishop."

The rector believes part of the current problem stems from the way in which Episcopal bishops are chosen. Moyer likens it to "a popularity contest," and says it includes no careful background checks on the success of a man's previous ministry and the fruit it has born in other places.
