...Episcopal Bishop Charles Bennison ordered ministers throughout his Pennsylvania diocese yesterday to read a letter explaining his suspension of Rev. David Moyer. A pastor and national leader of the conservative Episcopal group "Forward in Faith," Moyer embraces a traditional reading of the Bible and believes that women and homosexuals should not be ordained as ministers. Bennison's letter accused Moyer of refusing to let the bishop visit his congregation. Moyer's attorney responds that his client merely asked the liberal bishop to affirm church doctrines including "the teachings of Scripture as to human sexuality" before visiting. Bennison says Moyer will be defrocked on September 4 if he fails to submit to the bishop's authority. Moyer's attorney responded that "a true liberal tolerates diversity and this is nothing more than an attempt to stamp out the opposition."
