...The Archbishop of Detroit, Cardinal Adam Maida, plans to tell parishioners next Sunday that public officials who are Roman Catholics have "a special moral obligation" on the abortion issue. His message to be read on Respect Life Sunday -- portions of which were published in the Detroit News -- says "there is a higher law, the law of God." Maida's advice to Catholic voters follows pro-life protests aimed at Attorney General Jennifer Granholm, the Democratic candidate for governor, who says she is Catholic but supports legal abortion. Her Republican opponent, Lieutenant Governor Dick Posthumus -- a Protestant who opposes abortion -- says Granholm cannot have it both ways "by claiming to be 'personally pro-life,' while promoting a culture which destroys life."
