August's Edition focuses on& Christian Responsibility |
|
Much of our difficulty as seeking Christians stems from our
unwillingness to take God as He is and adjust our lives accordingly. We insist upon trying
to modify Him and bring Him nearer to our own image. A.W. Tozer
It’s hard to listen to the news today without hearing about “rights”.
We have “civil rights”, “equal rights”, “women’s rights”, “human rights”, and even “animal
rights”. Everyone is demanding to have his or her rights. Conversely, few of these people stop
to think of the other side of that coin and that is what are his or her “responsibilities.”
Rights and responsibility go hand in hand. There can be no separation of the two. To separate
them would be to create an unhealthy and dysfunctional person or group.
In the church today there seems to be the same problem. We talk
about “our liberty in the Lord”, “freedom in Christ”, “Christian Liberty” and “Freedom from the
Law”. These are all true and we should talk about them. There seems to be a tendency by some to
not understand the cost of something that is free. Grace, Christian freedom and salvation are
free but they did not come at a cheap price. They came at the expense of the most precious
commodity in the universe, the blood of Jesus Christ. We should enjoy the freedom God has given
us. We should also deal with everything that goes with that freedom. We are freed from the power
of sin but we were not set free and abandoned to our own ways.. According to the Bible, as
Christians we have responsibilities to live up to. Christianity is not spiritual welfare!

Christian Apologist Warns Believers to Use Brains, Not Just Emotions
http://headlines.agapepress.org/archive/7/272001d.asp
(AgapePress) - Modern-day evangelicals have become so focused on bare
emotion and "winning the heart" that they are no longer contending intellectually for
the faith in the public square. That is the conclusion of Phillip Johnson, a law professor who
also travels the world teaching Christian apologetics.
Johnson says he is frustrated by many evangelicals who believe they
can preserve their faith by "walling off" a Christian subculture, hoping to keep
their world independent of the mainstream culture. He says the problem comes when the mainstream
culture infiltrates that Christian subculture. Christians, Johnson says, are left defenseless
because their immune systems have not been tested against the "infections" from the
mainstream.
In very blunt terms, Johnson says there is no need for Christians to
be dumb. He urges Christians to study their own doctrines and be able to speak for what they
believe and why they believe it. Johnson made his remarks during an interview with
Baptist Press in Louisville, Kentucky, where he spoke at a recent conference at
the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Worship
http://www.christianarsenal.com/Worship.htm
We hear a lot about the term “Worship” in the church today. We have worship seminars, worship
specialists, and more. I am sure if you were to ask 100 people what worship was you would get
100 different answers. What I find is so many times when we talk about true worship, we are
really talking about methodology and form. Traditional worship, Contemporary worship, Biblical
worship, Youth worship services, Children’s worship services and the list goes on. When Jesus
talked about true worship, He had an understanding of worship that was fundamentally different
from every religious group that came before.

In His Steps - Charles M. Sheldon
Charles Sheldon's classic story of the pledge to do nothing until asking "What would
Jesus do?" is still relevant today. Written in the late 19th century, the challenge of
this story reverberates as we begin the 21st. Charles Sheldon did a wonderful job of challenging
Christians to follow the example of Christ and to know Him better. He points out that in order
to answer the question "What Would Jesus Do?" you have to have a ever deepening
intimate relationship with the Lord. In His Steps really shows what it means to 'take up your
cross' and follow Jesus. It brings us back to the very root and foundation of Christianity -
trying to live in Jesus' example, and shows how really following this path radically changes
lives. Be prepared to examine your own life and get convicted!
