Religion:  Scientology

Category:  Cult

Founder/Leader:

L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1986). Founded Scientology in 1954 in California. The current headquarters in Los Angeles, California.

Foundational Documents:

Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health and others by Hubbard. The Way to Happiness.

God is...

It rejects the biblical description of God. Scientology does not define God or a Supreme Being. Everyone is a "Thetan," an immortal spirit with unlimited powers over its own universe. However everyone is not are aware of this particular fact.

Jesus is...

Jesus is rarely mentioned in Scientology. Jesus was not the Creator, and not an "operating Thetan" (in control of supernatural powers, cleared from mental defects). Jesus did not die for sins.

The Holy Spirit is...

The Holy Spirit is not part of this belief system.

Method of Salvation:

There is no sin and therefore no need to repent. Salvation is freedom from reincarnation. Members must work with an "auditor" on his "engrams" , "idiosyncrasies" or "hang-ups" to achieve the state of "clear," then progress up the "bridge to total freedom."

Death and Beyond...

Hell is a myth. People who get clear of engrams become operating Thetans.

Other Beliefs:

Members observe birth of Hubbard and anniversary of publication of Dianetics. Controversy follows the group worldwide. Time magazine and Reader's Digest have published damaging exposes. Various media have reported that church leaders have had indictments and/or convictions for burglary, wiretapping, conspiracy, and other felonies. The movie "Battlefield Earth" that starred John Travolta has a definite doctrinal meaning for this group.
