Religion: Christian Science ( CS )
Category: Cult
Founder/Leader:
Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910). Founded 1875 in Massachusetts. Current headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts.
Foundational Documents:
"Science and Health; with the Key to the Scriptures" are the main writings. Other writings include "Manual of the Mother Church" and other assorted books by Mrs. Eddy. The Bible is believed not to be as reliable as Mrs. Eddy's writings. The Christian Science Journal, Christian Science Sentinel, and other writings are in the sacred library of CS.
God is...
God is believed to be an impersonal Principle of life, truth, love, intelligence, and spirit. Since God is all that truly exists, the universe of matter is nothing but an illusion.
Jesus is...
Jesus was just a man who displayed the Christ Idea. "Christ" means perfection, and is not to be understood as a person. Jesus was not God, and God can never become man or flesh. Jesus did not suffer and could not suffer for sins. He did not die on the cross. He was not resurrected physically from the grave. He will not literally come back.
The Holy Spirit is...
The Holy Spirit is defined as the teaching of Christian Science Church. The Holy Spirit is an impersonal power.
Method of Salvation:
All of humanity is already eternally saved. Sin, sickness, pain evil, and death are not real.
Death and Beyond...
Heaven and hell are only states of mind. Death is not real. The way to reach heaven is by attaining harmony which is oneness with God.
Other Beliefs:
Practitioners of Christian Science are used by it's general membership instead of doctors. Healing comes from realizing that a person cannot be sick or hurt and that the body cannot be ill, feel pain, or die since the universe of matter is just an illusion. CS attracts followers by claims of miraculous healing.
